This includes 9 versions of "Beat It On Down The Line".

Sorry for the dull thread, but it's not everyday I download 9 versions of a song from IA. I'm listening to a version now, VERY GOOD AND UNDERRATED!!

Though it works for many, I just can't do only individual songs. Used to, but not anymore. Ever since I found the wonder that is the Archive, I almost have to listen to the entire show start to finish. I guess I feel like in order to really get the impact of one particular tune, I have to have all the others that surrounded it to make it whole. Perhaps that's just me.

I'm some where in between...I can (seriously!) listen to StSt's one after another, but mostly go for sets/partials of shows...eg, with the 71 summer RTs I must have listened to Bertha-->BDPalace 50 times by now, but have not yet listened to the whole thing thru ...

There are just too many other things I want to listen to for me to set aside three hours for the Grateful Dead on a regular basis. I more or less rely on iTunes to throw a couple of Dead tracks into my pseudo-random listening mix during the day.

But if something good comes along on This Just In, such as Charlie Miller's upgrade of the magisterial 06-09-76 the other day (I can't resist 76 Dead)

(one to add to your listen-to list if you missed it) or today's Melkweg matrix,I find the time for them.

Given the nature of my normal listening patterns, I almost never listen to a full show at one sitting. I will start with the first set on the way to work, then, depending on my schedule at work, I may be able to get through the rest by the end of the day (with iterruptions for meetings, lunch, consults and the occasional interview). If I'm unable to complete the whole thing by the end of my day, I have the pleasure of blasting the remainder on the drive homw. Now this applies to shows I have loaded in the iPod. For those shows I stream, it can stretch over a couple of days. Annoying habit, but I can't seem to break it.

EDIT: I guess I will admit having my listening time occasionally interrupted by other bad habits. Recently, for example, Mr. Greene, new Metheny trio and old Metheny bootleg from '74 (with Jaco).

Prime example of the point you made earlier about hearing songs in their context within the show is the 'what-just-happened-there?' death-defying switch from Dancin' in the Street to Wharf Rat in the above-mentioned Boston show. I don't know which other band would have had the nerve to pull a stunt like that and it would be a shame to miss it.

Isn't it a shame when work has to interrupt our listening pleasures though?

One of my favorites. In fact, maybe you missed the brief discussion last week that touched on the show:

I like Beat It On Down The Line too and agree it's under appreciated. I would follow that one up with 9 versions of Cold Rain & Snow.

I'd replace those with 33 versions of Saint Stephen. Start with 6-14-68, include the two from the 68 mystery disks, and then progress thru the Aug runs (21-24), Oct, and Dec 68, grab a number from Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr of 69, and then progress from there...

IMHO.

Jesus...you are a 1968 whore. Where you born in 1968? Do you do the 68 in your spare time?

Weren't interest rates sky high (10%) in 1968?

*smile*

That must be it...I'd probably die and go to heaven if I could just get 10% on my retirement account.

Yeah, it's really pretty pathetic, isn't it? Think of how much fuller your life is with 30 yrs to choose from?

Think of me as a sad, deprived little man, with only a handful of years to select from...on the other hand, you have to admit, they're damn good years, eh?

While '68 is powerful some Heads won't listen to post '78. I can't imagine not loving Althea, but hey what can you do?

I trust you've got the BIODTL from 4.29.71? Best ever (by a loooong shot) imho.
